Emergency Dentistry

A tooth and a first aid case. 3D rendered illustration. Most people know that when they break a leg, they need to get to the emergency room or urgent care center as quickly as possible. People also know about other emergencies, such as getting burned by cooking grease or getting cut by glass. So many times, people have to visit the ER or Urgent Care Center for problems after normal medical hours. However, not as many people understand that you can have a dental emergency too and need to see a dentist after business hours. At Ace Dental Roseville, we are here to help you get the dental care you need after hours. Just give us a call at (916) 772-0111.

What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency happens when you get an injury to the teeth or gums. The injury is serious and shouldn’t be set aside to normal business hours. Ignoring a dental problem can lead to bigger problems that are more costly down the road or cause permanent damage to your mouth.

Here are some typical dental emergencies:

  • Toothaches
  • Chipped or broken teethbroken-tooth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Extruded tooth
  • Objects caught between teeth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Broken brackets or wires
  • Loose brackets or wires
  • Injuries to jaw or mouth
  • Injuries to tongue

What Can I Do?

For chipped or broken teeth, save any pieces. Rinse your mouth and the pieces using warm water. If you are bleeding, put a piece of gauze in the area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops. Use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth, cheek or lip near the broken/chipped tooth to prevent swelling and relieve pain. Call Ace Dental Roseville as soon as possible.

When you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water. Use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If you notice swelling in your mouth, apply a cold compress to your mouth or cheek. Don’t put pain relievers against the gums where your tooth is hurting because it may burn the gum tissue. Call our office for help.

tooth-remedy2If you are playing sports or you fall and knock out your tooth, get the tooth. Grab it by the crown or the part you see in your mouth. Rinse off the tooth root with water. Avoid scrubbing it or taking away any tissue fragments. If possible, you can see if the tooth will go back into place, but don’t force it. Otherwise, put the tooth in a small container of milk or cup of water that contains a pinch of table salt, if milk is not available. You also can use Save-a-Tooth products. Whenever you knock out a tooth, you have to see Ace Dental Roseville immediately. If we can get you into the office and the tooth back into your mouth within an hour, we have the greatest chance of you keeping your tooth.

You also want to visit your dentist right away for extruded (partially dislodged) tooth. Until you reach your dentist’s office, you should apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to relieve pain. Also, you can take pain medicine.

If you feel that something is caught between your teeth, you want to try using dental floss to dislodge it. If that doesn’t work, your dentist can help you get it removed. Do not use a pin or sharp object to remove it because that can harm your tooth or gums or some other part of your body.

When you lose a filling or crown, you can put a piece of gum in the cavity. You also can put dental cement in the place. Ace Dental Roseville will make an appointment as soon as possible to replace the filling or crown. If you can’t get to the dentist right away and the tooth is causing pain, put some clove oil on the sensitive area. It can be bought at a pharmacy or in the spice section of your grocery store. You can try to slip the crown back over the tooth with dental cement. Do not use super glue!

broken-bracesIf a wire breaks or is protruding from a bracket or band, it could be poking your cheek, tongue or gum. You can use the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire into a more comfortable position. If you can’t change the location of the wire, cover the end with orthodontic wax, a small cotton ball, or piece of gauze until you can get to your orthodontist’s office. You don’t want to cut the wire because you might swallow it or breathe it into your lungs.

If your brackets and bands are loose, you need to reattach them temporarily. The way to do this is with orthodontic wax. Alternatively, put the wax on the braces as a cushion. Make an appointment with an orthodontist as soon as possible.

When you injury your mouth, tongue or jaw, you will need to visit a surgeon or dentist without delay. Usually, this injury is done at the ER or urgent care center. The center will take an X-ray to determine the extent of the injuries and resolve the problem.
