Bone Grafting

Need a dental bone graft?

The gums are superficial soft tissues covering harder and thicker bone underneath. This is known as the alveolar bone or jawbone. The upper jawbone is called the maxilla and the lower jawbone is called the mandible. The tooth roots are embedded deep into the jaw bones.

In some cases, especially when getting dental implants, the alveolar bone may not be strong or thick enough to hold the implant in place. In such case, you will be advised to undergo bone grafting.

What is Bone Grafting?

bone grafting dentist in rosevilleBone grafting is the process of adding a piece of bone (called a graft) to an existing bone structure. In the case of dental bone grafting, the graft is added to the jaw bone to increase the mass and thickness of the jaws.

A bone graft is a major surgical procedure that requires anesthesia. It may also require significant recovery time and lifestyle restrictions to allow the jaws to heal fully. When getting a bone graft, make sure you have a companion to drive you home and stay with you following the appointment.

When Do I Need a Bone Graft?

Because a bone graft is done to increase the mass and structure of the jaws, it can only be done when the jawbone has significantly deteriorated in size and structure. Some of the causes of such jaw deformity include:

  1. Periodontal disease. Gum and bone recession occurs when there is a long-standing infection underneath the gums.
  2. Edentulism. Toothlessness can lead to gum and bone recession because there is nothing embedded into the gums. The gums and bone are naturally designed to hold teeth in place and without teeth, the gums and bone will degenerate.
  3. Long-term use of dentures. Dentures provide artificial teeth, but they do not maintain gum health because they are not embedded into the tissues. Prolonged use of dentures can actually promote gum and bone degeneration.
  4. Natural oral deformities. Cleft palate and other related oral deformities may also require grafting for proper reconstruction.
  5. Trauma. A broken jaw due to injuries and trauma may need grafting, depending on the extent of the damage.

Bone grafting is highly recommended for successful outcome of the following procedures:

  • Dental implantation. Patients who have receded gums and poor bone structure will not be able to get dental implants. Implants need sufficient gum and bone mass to be able to osseointegrate. If the jaw bone is left unrestored, the implants have a high risk of failure.
  • Aesthetic improvement. Shrunken gums can look very unpleasant and it can also make it difficult to wear dentures. To improve the appearance of a patient and allow prosthetic restoration, bone grafting is recommended.
  • Facial reconstruction. Lack of jaw structure can greatly affect the shape of the face and even cause wrinkling and sagging of the cheeks. For patients who want to undergo cosmetic surgery and facial reconstruction, jaw restoration will have to be included in the treatment plan.
